Saturday, February 1st:  Jewish Insights on the Soul
The western belief in the soul leads to profound decisions on the nature of life and implications for sustaining life. This belief also leads us to ask: Does the existence of the soul differentiate humans from the animal kingdom, requiring perhaps better treatment for humans than animals? Does the existence of the soul differentiate humans from artificial intelligence (e.g., robots) or might we one day treat robots the same way we treat humans? Join Rabbi Aaron Starr for a conversation on the Jewish belief in the soul and other aspects of humanity that make the human species unique. Offered monthly and including a great breakfast, Wisdom and Coffee provides an opportunity for learning and conversation on a Shabbat morning that is entirely separate from our prayer service. Saturday, March 1st: When Bad Things Happen to Good People
If God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good, how does Judaism explain individual suffering? What wisdom does our tradition share in understanding the pain, disability, and illness, and ultimately death that all of us experience, and how might it makes our lives richer and more meaningful? Saturday, April 26th: Tikkun Olam as Toxic Compassion?
At Passover, we remember that we were slaves in Egypt and that God brought us out of slavery. From this we might draw two conclusions: (1) we must be careful when we are powerful never to become like the Egyptians and (2) we must be powerful enough to never let anyone else treat us the way that Egypt did. Where do the values of compassion and justice collide, and how might we find a balance in offering compassion and in self-preservation?
