9:30 AM - 1:00 PMWe’re thrilled to present an exciting Scholar-in-Residence weekend September 26th & 27th, brought to you by the generosity of Gretchen and Rabbi Ethan Davidson: featuring former JTS chancellor, professor and author Dr. Arnold Eisen.
Dr. Arnold M. Eisen, one of the world’s foremost authorities on American Judaism, is chancellor emeritus of The Jewish Theological Seminary and professor of Jewish Thought. Professor Eisen became chancellor in 2007 and stepped down in spring 2020 to return to teaching and scholarship as a full-time member of the JTS faculty. During his tenure as chancellor, he transformed the education of religious, pedagogical, professional, and lay leaders for North American Jewry, with a focus on graduating highly skilled, innovative leaders who bring Judaism alive in ways that speak authentically to Jews at a time of rapid and far-reaching change.
Professor Eisen is the author, among other works, of Galut: Modern Jewish Reflection on Homelessness and Homecoming, and Rethinking Modern Judaism: Ritual, Commandment, Community, and co-author of The Jew Within. His recent (2024) publication is Seeking the Hiding God – a Personal Theological Essay.
The Event Schedule:
- Friday, September 26th: Kabbalat Shabbat service at 5:30 PM, Shabbat dinner at 6 PM (registration is required by Friday, September 19th), followed by a lecture on Seeking the Hiding God Together
- Saturday Morning, September 27th: Dr. Eisen will give the d’var Torah at Shabbat morning services on Doing Theology with the Children of Israel. Services start at 9:30 AM.
- Saturday Afternoon, September 27th: Join us for a delicious Shabbat lunch following services at 12 Noon (registration is required by Friday, September 19th. He will speak at 1 PM on Averting the Evil of the Decree.
Registration required by September 19. Cost for Friday dinner: $25 members / $30 not-yet-members. No cost for Shabbat lunch, but registration requested.
