Monday, February 3, 2025 5 Shevat 5785

10:45 AM - 1:00 PM

Speaker: Dr. Michael Pytlik, Oakland University - An Archaeologist's View: The Formation of the Synagogue in Ancient Israel-How did it develop and what made it so special?

The synagogue as a place of worship was started long before the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 CE. The recent uncovering of the remains of ancient synagogues has allowed us to trace the synagogue’s development, both in form and function. Join us as we explore the evolution of the synagogue in Israel and the Near East and discover some fascinating art, archeology, and the religious function of this important institution.

Dr. Michael Pytlik teaches courses in Anthropology, specializing in the archeology of Israel, and in Judaic Studies at Oakland University. He has led the study abroad program to Israel since 2009, which is focused on an archaeological field school and tour of the country. His doctoral studies focused on the historical King David through the lenses of archeology, history, biblical studies and on subsequent narratives about the king. Dr. Pytlik also teaches courses such as mysticism, sacred sites of the Near East and Jerusalem, World Religions, and various courses in Judaic Studies.

Generously sponsored by Joy and Allan Nachman Catered lunch will be provided.
